Daniel and Michelle are co-founders of Nimbus Group, a provider of corporate and residential cleaning services. They discuss working together, establishing a business, and raising their nine-year-old daughter, Camellia.

"So when I met Michelle and when we got married, I asked her to help me out with the business (sales). We were basically directly involved in the same KPIs because I was also the founder and CEO. A Mission To Clean: How Daniel Thong, Co-Founder Of Nimbus Tackles The Cleaning Industry With A Purpose

There are many jobs out there that would make no difference to our quality of life and society if they were suddenly gone tomorrow, but just one day where frontline blue-collar workers do not perform their work (like the clearing of trash), the impact will be keenly felt. Yet, such essential jobs are often lowly paid, due to the rampant sourcing of cheap labour that takes place in the industry.

This is why I started Nimbus, to change the perception of cleaning, and to make a difference by giving good livelihoods to workers in this industry through good service and more efficient ways of performing the work.”

But, as he shared at The Sunday Times Roundtable on wages in an age of disruption on Friday, this was the start-up's intention from the outset - to fix the "broken" cleaning industry by lifting wages for cleaners.

"Why are you cleaning? You have a Master's degree. What are you doing??"

Having given up an offer for a cushy job in the UK at KPMG, after coming in first in an international case competition and graduating top in his academic programmes, Thong also readily admits how difficult it was telling his parents about his efforts to dive headlong into a start-up.
